HBO Asia’s original shows premiere at prestigious film fests, Entertainment News & Top Stories

SINGAPORE – A horror story by Singaporean director Nicole Midori Woodford is amongst a number of new works from HBO Asia that may premiere at a prestigious movie pageant.

Titled The Tour, the story of a mom and her quickly who encounters the supernatural on a seaside is an episode from the second season of horror anthology collection Folklore, for which home-grown film-maker Eric Khoo returns as showrunner.

Along with one other episode, The Day The Wind Blew, directed by Japanese pop singer Seiko Matsuda, The Tour will premiere on the thirty fourth Tokyo Worldwide Movie Pageant, set to happen in October and November.

Woodford, 34, who can also be a lecturer in movie research, received the Nationwide Arts Council’s Younger Artist Award in 2020.

She says: “The episode stems from the mom’s perspective who has suppressed reminiscences of a previous trauma which haunts her when she’s asleep and awake.

“Both worlds come together in a very layered and psychological approach during the Hungry Ghost Festival. I think there’s a lot of heart and emotion that is tied intrinsically to the horror of what the family experiences.”

Two episodes from Thai drama collection Forbidden, co-directed by Thai director Anucha Boonyawatana and Korean-American director Josh Kim, will even premiere on the Busan movie pageant.

In early September, a number of episodes from Filipino crime thriller collection On The Job have been screened in competitors on the 78th Venice Movie Pageant. It was the one Asian work out of the 21 worldwide titles.

Main man John Arcilla was named Greatest Actor, the primary Filipino to win the accolade.

  • On The Job is offered on streaming service HBO Go, whereas the remaining can be out there in a while HBO Go in addition to HBO (StarHub TV Channel 601, Singtel TV Channel 420).
