Australia will face global ‘diplomatic fallout’ for not committing to net zero

College of Melbourne Deputy Vice-Chancellor Worldwide Professor Michael Wesley says there are worldwide implications for Australia if Prime Minister Scott Morrison doesn’t undertake a internet zero by 2050 coverage.

“It seems like the prime minister desperately wants to get to that net zero by 2050 commitment before Glasgow happens, of course, he’s now not publicly committed to going to Glasgow,” he advised Sky Information Australia.

Professor Wesley mentioned if Mr Morrison was dedicated to Glasgow it will be a “really bad look” as no dedication has but been made.

He mentioned international superpowers and nations within the Indo-Pacific are watching to see what Australia local weather coverage and commitments will likely be.

“We know that pretty much every single Pacific Island state in our own region is heavily critical of Australia’s position on climate change,” he mentioned.

“The diplomatic fallout from not reaching that sort of commitment is not only going to be on the global stage but closer to home as well.”
